The old saying goes "to get respect you need to give respect". Respect is earned; it does not automatically happen because you are a manager.

Make it a habit to say hello to all your employees as they arrive to work and goodbye as they leave work.

Commend your employee's in front of other staff members to create positive employee morale. As you are walking throughout the restaurant and you see an employee doing their job correctly, let them know that, that creates great employee morale.

Never correct an employee in front of other staff members. If it is the peak time make a note of it and talk to them before their shift is completed. When coaching or training an employee, especially during a correction process never be negative. Think of a way to communicate a positive action plan that the employee will understand and will be more receptive in correcting themselves in a positive way that will not offend them. Also, never demean them, you will never get anything accomplished using that method.

When communicating to your staff do not look past them, look at them so they understand that you are focused 100% on them.

When you are speaking to your employees never cut them off, hear them out. Have the mindset that there is more than one direction to get something achieved. Your staff members may have great ideas, so don't just think "it is my way or the highway".

By using the stick shift you are able to move your vehicle forward or backwards.

Before you communicate to your employees or co-workers think before you shift from thinks it to saying it..

By going over other possible ways to get your message across to staff members in a positive way will lead to different paths with different outcomes. Choose the outcome that will result in effective communication in an non-offending way.

Do not think and say on impulse, shift into a gear that will give you positive results.

You will only create distance between you and your staff members if you choose the wrong path that creates negative results

Never play favoritism your employees will notice if you do and that respect will go out the window.

Fraternization:

This is when a manager of supervisor develops a personal relationship, whether it is a sexual or friendship with staff members. Normally companies have a stiff policy about fraternization in the workplace.

If a manager fraternized with a staff member or socialize with other employees outside the workplace that will create favoritism: when it comes to correcting that employee that you are either socializing with or your friends with, it will be difficult to reprimand that particular person and other employees will notice that you are showing favoritism and may lead to animosity and lack of respect.
